Canada officially launched its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a star-studded opening ceremony in Toronto before battling back to earn a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the tournament’s first Group B match.

Held at BMO Field, the opening ceremony showcased Canada’s culture, diversity and musical heritage as the country welcomed fans from around the world to football’s biggest stage.

The event featured performances by Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Alanis Morissette, Jessie Reyez, Elyanna, William Prince, Vegedream, Sanjoy, and Nora Fatehi. Actor Will Arnett also participated in the celebrations.

Alanis Morissette performed the Canadian national anthem, while Aleksandar Gajić sang the anthem of Bosnia and Herzegovina, setting the stage for a memorable evening in Toronto.

Once the action moved to the pitch, Canada faced a difficult test against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite enjoying much of the possession and creating several promising opportunities, the hosts fell behind in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic headed Bosnia and Herzegovina into the lead from a set-piece.

Canada continued to press for an equaliser throughout the match. Richie Laryea came close, only to be denied by a crucial goal-line intervention from Sead Kolašinac, while Jonathan David and his teammates repeatedly tested the Bosnian defence.

However, Bosnia and Herzegovina remained organised and resilient, frustrating the home side for much of the contest.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 78th. Substitute Cyle Larin made an immediate impact, scoring with virtually his first touch after being set up by Promise David. The goal sparked celebrations among the Canadian supporters and ensured the hosts avoided defeat in their opening match.

While Canada may have been disappointed not to convert their dominance into victory, the result still marked a significant milestone.

The hosts secured the first FIFA World Cup point in Canadian history, capping an evening that combined a vibrant celebration of Canadian culture with a determined performance on the field as the country began its home World Cup journey.
