The United States began its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion, combining a vibrant opening ceremony in Los Angeles with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Group D.

In front of a packed crowd at Los Angeles Stadium, football, music and entertainment came together to celebrate the start of the host nation’s World Cup journey.

Before kick-off, fans were treated to a star-studded opening ceremony that reflected the global spirit of the tournament. Katy Perry, Future, Tyla, LISA, and Anitta were among the headline performers, while country duo Dan + Shay performed the United States national anthem.

The ceremony blended music and culture, creating a vibrant atmosphere and welcoming supporters from around the world to football’s biggest stage.

The hosts carried that energy onto the pitch and made a dream start. The United States took the lead after just seven minutes when Paraguay’s Damian Bobadilla turned Weston McKennie’s cross into his own net following a driving run from Christian Pulisic.

The Americans continued to press and doubled their advantage in the 31st. Pulisic delivered a precise cross for Folarin Balogun, who finished confidently to make it 2-0. Balogun struck again in first-half stoppage time, becoming the first American player since 1930 to score twice in a World Cup match and giving the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

Paraguay reduced the deficit in the 73rd through substitute Mauricio, but any hopes of a comeback were ended in stoppage time when Gio Reyna added a fourth goal for the United States.

The 4-1 victory marked the highest goal tally ever recorded by the United States in a FIFA World Cup match and provided an ideal start to the co-hosts’ Group D campaign.

After a dazzling celebration of music and culture, the home side delivered an equally impressive performance on the field, showcasing attacking quality and confidence as they made a winning start to their quest for a deep run on home soil.
